Out Now! “My Blueberry Nights” DVD
Jul
01

Norah Jones makes her acting debut and Wong Kar Wai does his first English-language film in this tale of a brokenhearted lover on a meandering cross-country foray. Singer Jones takes the lead in Wong’s dreamy tale of a woman in the aftermath of a romance that ended badly. First she’s seen spilling her guts to a New York cafe owner (Jude Law) who feeds her blueberry pie, then she’s waitressing down South and watching the painful marital breakup between a cop (David Strathairn) and his bimbo wife (Rachel Weisz), finally hanging with a gambler (Natalie Portman) in Nevada. The DVD has a question-and-answer session with Wong, deleted scenes and a making-of segment. DVD, $19.97.

Rachel wises up to a move back home
Jun
22

The lure of London has proved too much for Rachel Weisz – who is moving back to Britain after five years in America. The 37-year-old actress has purchased a stunning £3.5million house in Primrose Hill, the fashionable enclave that is also home to supermodel Kate Moss and designer Sadie Frost.

Rachel will return to the UK from New York with her fiance, film director Darren Aronofsky, 39, and their two-year-old son Henry later this month. ‘Rachel is really excited about her move back to Britain,’ says a friend. ‘She feels it’s the right time to be coming back. ‘She initially moved to New York for work and to be close to Darren, who is a native of the city, but they have decided to live in London.

‘Rachel was born there and missed it hugely.’ Weisz, star of The Mummy, revealed she missed British culture in New York when she said: ‘It’s a relief to speak to English people. ‘It’s a very different culture.’

She won’t have much time to make her London house a home as she is working in Malta on a tight schedule on the movie Agora, alongside Max Minghella, son of the late film director Anthony Minghella.

The Lovely Bones Filming
Jun
19

The Peter Jackson juggernaut has rolled into Queenstown, with about 100 crew in the South Island resort to film the Wellington director’s latest Hollywood blockbuster, The Lovely Bones. Production spokesman Matthew Dravitzki, of WingNut Films, confirmed the crew had a week-long shoot of visual-effects elements around the region.

The Lovely Bones, which is based on an Alice Sebold novel, stars Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon. The production company was tight-lipped about which, if any, of the stars were in Queenstown. Dravitzki said because much of Jackson’s Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot around Queenstown, it was hard not to think about locations for The Hobbit, to be produced by Jackson.

“However, we’re concentrating on The Lovely Bones on this trip.” The thriller is about a young girl who was raped and murdered, watching from heaven how her death affects her family. It is expected to be released in the US in October next year.

Department of Conservation Wakatipu area spokesman John Roberts said WingNut Films had a permit to film in several locations but the details were part of a private commercial agreement.
